November is officially recognized as Financial Literacy Month (FLM), and this year’s theme, “Money on Your Mind, Talk About It,” encourages Canadians to open up about their finances. For far too long, topics like debt, savings, and financial struggles have been shrouded in secrecy and shame. Thankfully, recent trends such as Loud Budgeting and the Buy Nothing Movement have started to change the narrative by promoting more open and honest discussions about money. While there is still work to do, this year’s FLM theme is a step in the right direction.

Talking openly about your financial situation, whether it’s managing debt or setting goals for saving, can help reduce stress and increase your financial literacy. By discussing money without fear of judgment, you can find practical advice and solutions that improve your financial management skills. What is Financial Literacy Month?

Financial Literacy Month is a national initiative led by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC). The campaign aims to make financial knowledge more accessible and inclusive by working with a variety of organizations from the private, public, and non-profit sectors. Throughout November, the FCAC engages with Canadians to help improve their financial understanding and resilience. Be sure to follow the FCAC’s social media accounts, as well as those of CCS and other trusted financial organizations, for helpful tips and resources.

Why is Financial Literacy Important?

You might be wondering why financial literacy matters so much. The truth is, understanding how to manage your money is essential for your financial well-being. A solid grasp of personal finance helps you make informed decisions, stay on top of debt, and achieve long-term financial stability. Learning from credible financial experts can help you navigate challenges and avoid costly mistakes.

Financial Literacy for Beginners

If you’re new to money management, financial literacy is especially important. Young adults, students, and newcomers to Canada often face additional challenges when it comes to managing money. They may be more vulnerable to financial traps, scams, or “quick-fix” solutions that promise easy ways out of debt. Gaining a healthy understanding of personal finance early on can help you avoid these pitfalls and make better choices.

Building Confidence in Your Finances

One of the primary goals of Financial Literacy Month is to increase Canadians’ confidence when it comes to managing their finances. This year, the FCAC encourages people to take small but meaningful steps to improve their financial knowledge, such as:

  • Checking their credit score
  • Talking to a friend or family member about budgeting
  • Reaching out to a financial professional for advice

You can also participate in the #MoneyOnYourMind challenge on social media to join the conversation and share your financial experiences.

Talk About Money: It’s OK!

Now in its 14th year, the theme “Money on Your Mind. Talk About It!” encourages Canadians to talk openly about their financial situations without fear of shame or judgment. Sharing your financial experiences on social media with the hashtag #MoneyOnYourMind is a powerful way to break the stigma around money and start a conversation.

At CCS, we talk to individuals and families every day who reach out for help with their financial challenges. If you’re struggling with money, remember: you’re not alone, and there’s no reason to be afraid to seek help. Talking about money is the first step toward solving financial problems and building a healthier financial future.

Let’s make this Financial Literacy Month a turning point by breaking down the barriers to open conversations about money. Together, we can create a more financially confident and knowledgeable Canada.
